A Calorie-Filled Afternoon in Savannah, GA

It’s hard not to come across Collins Quarter if you are looking for places to eat while in Savannah, Georgia. Let’s just say, the search results did not disappoint.

‌Last October, we took a family trip to Hilton Head, SC. While this was a business trip for my partner, it was an excellent opportunity for the rest of the family to escape the hustle and bustle. I wasn’t quite ready for summer to be over just yet because, like I’ve said before, I love warm weather. So we grabbed our flip-flops, swimsuits, and baby gear and headed south!

Outside of Florida, I haven’t quite ventured around the Southern part of the United States (shocking even for me!), so there was a lot to look forward to. A lot of research went into this trip, and because we were short on time, I wanted to cram as much as possible into the few hours we had after we landed in Savannah before heading to Hilton Head, South Carolina. While a hiccup with our rental car set us back a few hours, I am happy to say that even with children in tow, we could sightsee and relax a bit. It was well worth it.

Savannah Airport/Hilton Head International Airport

Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport is the preferred airport for the area. This airport is often used by travelers going to Hilton Head (as the name suggests), and naturally, hotels in the area offer free shuttles to and from the airport. Since we were traveling with children, you can imagine how much equipment was involved, so we opted to drive.

Once we landed in Savannah, we headed straight downtown. The drive from the Savannah airport to downtown is about ~30 minutes. I first thought this part of town was quaint, full of old, beautiful trees, and overall beautiful. It was almost like stepping back in time. There is a family-oriented feel, and we felt the Southern hospitality that Savannah is known for, so we wanted to stay a bit longer.

Collins Quarter

It’s hard not to come across Collins Quarter if you are looking for places to eat in Savannah, Georgia. Let’s just say the search results did not disappoint; the ambiance, decor, and food were nothing short of incredible.‌ If you are heading to Collins Quarter, I suggest dining inside, especially during summertime when it can get very humid. I also suggest previewing the menu ahead of time or checking out their Instagram (link below) because, let me tell ya, there are so many great choices you may end up ordering the entire menu!

Swine Time Beni w/a Moscow Mule

The portions were well suited for my partner but significantly large for me, so if your party doesn’t mind sharing, you can capitalize on taste testing.

After such a delicious meal, we all knew we would want ice cream, but before that, we walked around Historic Savannah, you know, to ease the guilt of over-indulging and whatnot.

Taking a stroll around town was tranquil and relatively quiet. Thanks to all the trees, the weather was pleasantly cool, and there were plenty of benches to sit on and take it all in.

There are many shops, restaurants, and bars along the Savannah River. If you have room for more snacks or want to take a piece of Savannah home, check out River Street Sweets.

Leopold’s Ice Cream ‌‌‌‌

There will ALWAYS be someone in our family unit who wants ice cream, especially if you walk past a place like Leopold’s. We were lucky not to have an extraordinarily long line, but we expected to wait at least 10 minutes to be served.

Stepping into Leopold’s felt like stepping back in time. The decor is quintessential 1950s. The pictures hanging around the parlor reminded us of those who came to this establishment to enjoy delicious ice cream on a hot Georgia day. ‌‌‌‌

The flavors were delightful, and the portions were very generous. I recommend the rum raisin; yum! ‌

As I mentioned, we were unable to get to all the places on the list, but I’d be remiss not to share them with you:

River Street Sweets

City Market

Forsyth Park /Garden of Fragrance

Downtown Savannah is walkable, and if you start early enough, you can easily tackle all the locations on this list in a day. One thing’s for certain: I would be happy to go back.
